Diesel fuel is a liquid product, used as fuel in diesel engines. Usually, this term means fuel produced from kerosene, gas oil fractions of direct distillation of crude oil. The main indicator of diesel fuel is a cetane number (A-45). Cetane number characterizes capacity of fuel to ignite in the combustion chamber that  is equal to a volume content of cetane in a mixture of methylnaphthalene, which has the same flammability as compared with researching fuel in case of standard conditions of ASTM D613. Flash point is defined by ASTM D93, for diesel fuel should be no higher than 70 ° C. Distillation temperature, determined by ASTM D86, for diesel fuel must not be below 200 and above 350 ° C. Diesel fuel is more economical and environmentally clear than gasoline.

The main consumers of diesel are railway transport, freight transport and agricultural machinery. There are so-called winter and summer diesel fuel. The main difference is temperature of the limiting filterability ASTM D 6371, and Cloud and Pour point ASTM D97, ASTM D2500, specified by the standards for this fuel. Production of winter fuel is more expensive, but without preheating it is impossible to use summer fuel, for example, at 20 ° C. Another problem is high content of water in diesel fuel. Water exfoliates during storage of diesel fuel and remains below because the density of diesel fuel is less than 1 kg / liter. Water tube in line completely blocked the engine.

Recently,sulfur content in diesel fuel was strictly limited in the fight for the environment. In this case sulfer refers to the content of sulfur compounds, i.e. mercaptans (R-SH), sulfides (RSR), disulfides (RSSR), thiophenes, tiofanov and others, but not elemental sulfur, as it is; R is a  hydrocarbon radical. The sulfur content in oil is in the range from 0,15% (light oil in Siberia), 1.5% (oil Urals) to 5-7% (heavy tar oil); permissible content in ship fuel is  to 1%, however,  according to the latest regulations of Europe and California allowable sulfur content in diesel fuel is no more than 0,001% (10 ppm). Reduction of sulfur content in diesel fuel, as a rule, leads to a reduction of its lubricating properties, so existence of additives is prerequisite  for diesel fuel contents ultralow sulfur.

Diesel fuel takes the third place after oil and gas in Russia's exports (in monetary terms). In 2005, Russia exported 33.8 million tons of diesel fuel in the amount of 16,2 billion $.

Alternative to diesel fuel is biodiesel and emulsified diesel fuel. Diesel fuel is designed for high-speed diesel and gas turbine engines of ground and naval equipment. Conditions of mixing and ignition of fuel in diesel engines differ from those of gasoline engines.The advantage is a possibility of a high compression ratio (up to 18 in high-speed diesel), resulting in specific consumption of fuel in them is 25-30% lower than gasoline engines. At the same time, diesel engines are more complicated to manufacture, large size. For efficiency and reliability diesel engines successfully compete with petrol engines.

The main operational parameters of diesel fuel:

  • Cetane number, which determines the high cardinality and economic ratios of the engine;
  • Fractional composition, which determines the completeness of combustion, smoke and emissions of the engine;
  • Viscosity and density to provide a normal supply of fuel atomization in the combustion chamber and the filtration efficiency of the system;
  • Low-temperature properties that detemine operation of the system at subzero temperatures of the environment and conditions of fuel storage;
  • The degree of purity which characterizes the reliability of the filters for coarse and fine cleaning and cylinder of the engine;
  • Flash point, which determines the conditions for safe use of fuel in diesel engines;
  • Presence of sulfur compounds, unsaturated hydrocarbons and metals, which characterizes a carbon formation, corrosion and wear.

Petroleum refining industry produced diesel fuel according to GOST 305-82 three brands:

  • L - summer, applied at ambient temperatures above 0 ° C;
  • W - winter, applied at temperatures down to -20 ° C (in this case, winter diesel fuel must have a pour point <-35 ° C and n <-25 ° C) or winter applied at temperatures down to -30 ° C then the fuel must have a pour point <-45 ° C and n <-35 ° C);
  • A - the Arctic, the temperature of which up to -50 ° C. The sulfur content in diesel fuel grades A and W does not exceed 0,2% - for I the type of fuel and 0,5 - for the type II fuel, grade A - 0,4%.

To meet the requirements for diesel fuel it is  allowed to use fuel with freezing point 0 ° C without rationing cloud. In accordance with GOST 305-82 adopted the following notation of diesel fuel: summer fuel is ordered taking into account the sulfur content and flash point (L-0 ,2-40), winter -  the sulfur content and freezing temperature (T-0, 2 - minus 35). Delivery of diesel fuel is  possible by  road and rail. In the symbol on the Arctic diesel fuel is only the content of sulfur: A-0, 2.

Shipment of diesel fuel is produced by rail directly from the factory-manufacturer. Supply of fuel by rail is needed to supply fuel industries and organizations that use in the manufacture and consume fuel oil, diesel fuel, gasoline, bitumen and other petroleum products.

Diesel fuel (GOST 305-82) is produced by compounding of  straigh-run and hydrotreated fractions in ratios, providing the standard of sulfur content. As raw material for hydrotreating is often used a mixture of middle-distillated fractions of direct distillation and secondary processes,more often of  straight-diesel and light gas oil of catalytic cracking. The sulfur content in virgin fractions depends on  processed oil ranges from 0,8-1,0% (for sulfur crudes), and the sulfur content in hydrotreated component - from 0,08 to 0,1%.

Sale and supply of diesel fuel to the consumer is in time. Export diesel fuel (TU 38.401-58-110-94) is produced for exports wiyh sulfur content 0.2%. Based on the requirements for sulfur content, diesel fuel for export is is produced by hydrofining of straight diesel fractions. To evaluate the quality on-demand of customers it is determined  diesel index (rather than the cetane number, as adopted GOST 305-82). In addition, instead of determining water content and coefficient of filterability by express method,  transparency of fuel is set at temperatures above 10 ° C.
