Cetane number characterizes capacity of fuel to ignite in the combustion chamber that is equal to a volume content of cetane in a mixture of methylnaphthalene, which has the same flammability as compared with researching fuel in case of standard conditions of ASTM D613. Flash point is defined by ASTM D93, for diesel fuel should be no higher than 70 ° C. Distillation temperature, determined by ASTM D86, for diesel fuel must not be below 200 and above 350 ° C. Petroleum refining industry produced diesel fuel according to GOST 305-82 three brands:
- L - summer, applied at ambient temperatures above 0 ° C;
- W - winter, applied at temperatures down to -20 ° C (in this case, winter diesel fuel must have a pour point <-35 ° C and n <-25 ° C) or winter applied at temperatures down to -30 ° C then the fuel must have a pour point <-45 ° C and n <-35 ° C);
- A - the Arctic, the temperature of which up to -50 ° C. The sulfur content in diesel fuel grades A and W does not exceed 0,2% - for I the type of fuel and 0,5 - for the type II fuel, grade A - 0,4%.
To meet the requirements for diesel fuel it is allowed to use fuel with freezing point 0 ° C without rationing cloud. In accordance with GOST 305-82 adopted the following notation of diesel fuel: summer fuel is ordered taking into account the sulfur content and flash point (L-0 ,2-40), winter - the sulfur content and freezing temperature (T-0, 2 - minus 35). Diesel fuel (GOST 305-82) is produced by compounding of straigh-run and hydrotreated fractions in ratios, providing the standard of sulfur content. As raw material for hydrotreating is often used a mixture of middle-distillated fractions of direct distillation and secondary processes,more often of straight-diesel and light gas oil of catalytic cracking. The sulfur content in virgin fractions depends on processed oil ranges from 0,8-1,0% (for sulfur crudes), and the sulfur content in hydrotreated component - from 0,08 to 0,1%.
